Jesus requires the undivided heart and every affection. You cannot refuse him. He has done too much for you. He suffered without the gate that He might sanctify you with His own blood. He gave Himself... and now how can you withhold anything from Him?

A practical piece of homely, common-sense wisdom says that there are two kinds of things we should not worry about—things we can help, and things we cannot. Evils we can help we ought to help.... But there are things we cannot help....

"Oh, Mother!... I never thought of that. Do kneel down with me, and ask God to forgive me, and help me to forgive Jack." So they prayed a long time; and when, at last, they rose from their knees, Willy looked as if he were at peace with all the world.

"Everybody can't be like Christopher Columbus, Mama." "Maybe not, my dear boy, but everyone can imitate Christ. Wicked men... mocked Him, blindfolded Him, and smote Him in the face.... If you will pray to Christ, He will make you a brave, manly Christian."

"What do you have, Mark?... Did you get that in that store?" "No." I was concentrating fiercely on outwitting my watchful, determined Mom—too focused to realize that I was now not only a thief, but a liar, too.

"Why do you rub at the knives forever?" asked Mary. Mary was the cook. "Because they are in my corner," Georgia said, brightly. " 'You in your small corner,' you know, 'and I in mine.' I will do the best I can; that is all I can do."

We must be subdued, not merely in our own opinion, not merely think ourselves subdued... but subdued so perfectly that the all-seeing eye of God can look us through, and the omniscient One knows that we are subdued.

Here he lies an infant in your arms. He is at your mercy.... You can lead him in the paths of virtue to a generous Christian manhood, or you can neglect him and allow him to go to shame and ruin. Let this thought be impressed deeply upon your consciousness.

Her quest was not yet over. For we now see four great barriers her faith had yet to surmount; namely, divine silence, human coldness, class, and humiliation. If we look at these in detail, we find that they illustrate the vital issues in many lives today.
