Oh, the cross has wondrous glory! Oft I’ve proved this to be true; When I’m in the way so narrow, I can see a pathway through; And how sweetly Jesus whispers: “Take the cross, thou need’st not fear, For I’ve tried the way before thee,” And the glory lingers near. The origin of this song is not quite certain. Some sources attribute the lyrics to William Hunter, while others claim they were written by Harriet Warner Re Qua in 1882. As for the music, William B. Bradbury wrote a very similar tune for “Watchman, Tell Me,” and some sources indicate that John W. Dadman (or Dadmun) arranged it for this song.
