A Time to Sew

Postage Stamp Quilt

Want to try your hand at quilt making?

Cut a 1-1/2 or 2-inch pattern out of sandpaper or crocus cloth, using old scissors. Press your fabrics, then lay sandpaper, rough side down, on fabric to trace around with a pencil, or simply cut around the sandpaper—whichever is easier for you. Start with one special piece of fabric in the center. You will need 4 squares of your next color, then 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24. Take ¼-inch seams. Be careful. Make it as accurate as possible—the corners should meet! Set each of these blocks together with a chain of white patches.

If a quilt seems overwhelming, just make a pillow, or one block makes a charming doll quilt. Enjoy sewing!
