    Resting through a stormy night;
    In thy sorrows and thy trials
    He will be thy guiding light.
    Lean upon the breast of Jesus,
    He thy faithful friend will be;
    If thine all to Him is given,
    All must work for good to thee.
  2. Lean upon the breast of Jesus,
    Simply trusting, never fear,
    Though thy tears may flow unceasing,
    Though thou dost not feel Him near.
    In thy weakness He’ll uphold thee,
    Cast on Him thy soul, thine all;
    Firmly standing, quietly watching,
    Calmly waiting for His call.

    Prayers unanswered, storms surround;
    Yet, however great the trial,
    His grace doth much more abound.
    For thy good and for His glory,
    He controls the tempest’s shock;
    Lean upon the breast of Jesus,
    Find in Him thy solid rock.
  4. Lean upon the breast of Jesus
    Through temptations sharp and keen;
    Loose thy grip from Him, no, never,
    Nor let anything between.
    Call on Him, He’ll give thee power
    Self and Satan to o’ercome;
    This good fight of faith fight bravely
    With thy Captain leading on.
  5. Lean upon the breast of Jesus,
    Fiery trials firm endure;
    Jesus is the great Refiner,
    He thy strength, thy helper sure.
    This—from all thy dross to cleanse thee—
    Is His sole and true design,
    That in His pure, glorious image
    Thy soul mayest brightly shine.
  6. Lean upon the breast of Jesus
    Through the griefs that pierce thy soul;
    He thy sorrow understandeth,
    All its weight upon Him roll.
    Hide thee in His loving bosom,
    Grace and strength from Him receive;
    In thine hour of deepest anguish,
    He will prove a friend indeed.
  7. Lean upon the breast of Jesus
    Through life’s ever-changing road;
    Find in Him thine only refuge,
    Comfort, strength, and true abode.
    Be encouraged, weary pilgrim!
    Thou shalt never walk alone;
    Only follow, and He’ll guide thee
    Safely, surely to His throne.
